About Spotsylvania County
Spotsylvania County is one the largest, fastest growing and most exciting places to live in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Located right along the I-95 corridor between Washington, DC and Richmond, Spotsylvania homes are sought after by commuters who make a living in both cities and its prime location has attracted a number of large companies to the county itself. There are about 90,000 people living in Spotsylvania County today but the number is ever increasing as the area grows in popularity.
Spotsylvania County was founded in 1720, a result of the merger of Essex, King and Queen and King William counties and named after Governor Alexander Spotwood. The area served as the backdrop for several key battles during the Civil War, most notably the bloody Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, a conflict that is still reenacted by locals every year.
The average price for a single family home in Spotsylvania County is around $225,000, but Spotsylvania homes can be found listed for as little as $100,000 or as much as $600,000 and up. There are a wide range of Spotsylvania homes to choose from, everything from a older home with great historical significance to brand new town houses and condos built to accommodate the growing population of the county.
Officially the nearby city of Fredricksburg is a part of Spotsylvania County for statistical purposes but separate local governments are maintained in both areas. Children in both areas attend one of a number of local schools across the county, all of which have a good academic record and reputation for excellence.
The historical significance of Spotsylvania County is still very much a part of everyday life for its residents as well as the thousands of visitors who come to the county every year. The Lake Anna State Park is another big draw. This is a most unusual state park as it encompasses land that was once a goldmine, Goodwin Gold Mine and the lake itself is a man made creation built in 1971 to serve as a water coolant for Dominion Power’s nuclear plant. In the intervening years a lively tourist attraction has built up around it, with boating and fishing both major attractions for locals and visitors alike.
Those who own Spotsylvania homes have access to great shopping and plenty of places to eat and are of course within a fifty mile drive of either Washington DC or Richmond when they crave some big city action.
