About Prince William County
Prince William County, VA is one of the larger counties in Virginia and also one the most affluent. Over 400,000 people reside in Prince William County, whose county seat Manassas may be a name more familiar to outsiders than that of the county itself.
The county was named for Prince William, Duke of Cumberland, the third son of King George II, a man who never quite go to be King but did have a strong military career. Prince William County was officially created in 1731 by an act of Virginia's General Assembly.
For two centuries Prince William County was mainly an agricultural community but that began to change in the 1960s when Manassas and the rest of Prince William county essentially became bedroom communities for the overflowing Washington DC, which is just 25 miles away.
By the close of the twentieth century a dramatic increase in population saw Prince William County officially become the third most populous local jurisdiction in Virginia
Because in part of its close association to Washington DC, Prince William County homes are usually in great demand. The price for the average Prince William county condo or townhouse for sale is currently around $250,000 with $300,000 being about the average for a detached single family home.
As it is a rather affluent area with a great many historical ties to the events that shaped the US, there are splendid Prince William County homes for sale that can command asking prices of several million dollars.
Those who own Prince William County homes are never short of things to do, or great places to shop and dine. One of the nation's largest malls is located in Prince William County. Potomac Mills has 240 stores offering outlet prices while Old Town Manassas offers more than 25 quaint shops and restaurants in a very historical setting.
There are of course plenty of sites and attractions for history buffs to enjoy including the Manassas Battlefield Park and the landmark town of Occoquan. There is plenty of opportunity for outdoor recreation within the 17,000-acre Prince William National Forest and the triple A affiliate of the MLB's Washington Nationals, the Prince William Nationals provide professional sporting action for those who live in Prince William homes.
