About King George County
King George County, VA is located about 40 miles north of Richmond VA and is home to some 17,000 permanent residents. Known as the “Gateway to the Northern Neck” it is a modern residential area that is still very proud of its strong history and as home to the the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division its military ties as well.
King George County, named as you might guess after King George I of England, was formed by an act of assembly in 1720. Over the years King George County homes were occupied by a number of very significant players in the history of the United States on the whole, including James Madison, George Washington's brother Samuel and William”Extra Billy” Smith, who was twice Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The county changed for good when in 1918, the US Navy established the Naval Proving Grounds located at Dahlgren in King George County. This base was set up to test naval guns and offered an ideal shooting range along the Potomac River.
Dahlgren was named for Admiral John Adolphus Dahlgren, a famous Naval ordnance designer. Today the Naval Surface Warfare Center is an essential part of the United States Navy defense program and is the major employer of those who own King George County homes.
Homes for sale in King George County list for an average price tends to hold steady at around $200,000 but there are homes available for as little as $100,000 or as much as $600,000 and up.
