About Culpeper County
Culpeper County, VA serves as the geographical center of many of the Commonwealth of Virginia's famed historical attractions and is renowned as a place that offers a high standard of living in a friendly small town type environment. Around 43,000 people call Culpeper County home.
Culpeper County was chartered in 1749, named for Sir Thomas Culpeper, a Colonial Virginia Governor. A 17 year old boy called George Washington was the individual actually tasked with the duty to survey the land and plot the Town of Culpeper, which was separately chartered a decade later. Years later the now General George Washington would have occasion to be indebted to a local Culpeper resident John Jameson. As company commander in the original Culpeper Minute Men Battalion it was he who exposed famed traitor Benedict Arnold.
During the Civil War Culpeper's railroad made it a strategic location for both sides to target and the county was the site of over 100 battles, leaving it seriously damaged after the war finally ended.
After failing into disrepair in the 1960's the whole of the downtown area of the Town of Culpeper was restored and in 1987 was declared Virginia Main Street Community. Today the Town and the County of Culpeper enjoys a reputation as being one of the best places to live in Northern Virginia.
The average listing price for Culpeper homes is currently around $240,000. There are a wide range of properties either side of that figure though, with some Culpeper homes for sale being offered for under $100,000 while others command $700,000 or more. The housing stock in Culpeper offers something to suit almost every budget and almost certainly every taste, from older restored homes in historical neighborhoods to brand new town homes and condos.
The Culpeper school district consists of a number of well respected elementary schools as well as two middle and two high schools.
If you own a Culpeper home there is never a shortage of things to do or see. The revitalized Culpeper Town Square is a popular shopping destination for locals and there are many unique stores and restaurants in the area as well as a number of national chain stores to frequent. There are of course many historically significant sites to visit including the rather interesting Graffiti House, a building dating back to 1850s which is filled with graffiti apparently written and drawn by recovering Civil War soldiers as the home was believed to have been used as a makeshift hospital for a number of years.
Apart from biking, hiking and fishing equestrian activities are popular in Culpeper County as well, with a number of local riding centers offering horseback riders to those of all ages and all equestrian abilities.
