About Caroline County
Caroline County VA is located 30 miles outside Richmond, VA and is the permanent home of more than 28,000 people. Caroline was officially first established in 1728 from land taken from the neighboring Essex, King and Queen and King William counties. It was named for Caroline of Ansbach, the German wife of George II. Caroline County is home to five distinct towns: Port Royal, Bowling Green, Ruther Glenn, Milford and Woodford. The largest of them, Bowling Green, serves as the county seat.
Like many of the surrounding counties Caroline played a large part in the early history of the United States. Caroline was the childhood home of the famous Clark Brothers, William , the legendary explorer and General George Rogers Clark, a hero of the Revolutionary War.
During the Civil War almost a million men marched or camped in Caroline County . Confederate troops under General George E. Pickett fought Union troops near Milford in 1864 and Confederate General Stonewall Jackson died in the county after being shot by his own troops at Chancellorsville. John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of Abraham Lincoln, was allegedly apprehended and shot by federal troops in Caroline County as well.
One of Caroline County's more recent famous sons was Secretariat, winner of the 1973 Triple Crown, who was born and stabled at The Meadow, which is now also the home of the annual Virginia State Fair.

The Caroline County School district is comprised of one primary and two elementary schools as well as separate middle and high schools, all of which enjoy an excellent reputation.
